Jordan is the perfect holiday destination, close to Europe but a world away. Aqaba, Jerash, Mount Nebo and the promised land, Wadi Rum, the Hijaz railway, the Baptism site, the Dead Sea, Wadi Dana, serious desert, Amman, Petra. A land of spectacular Roman, bibilical and archeological remains; the cradle of our civilization, home to eco-tourism, full of romantic and evocative place-names and more must-visit locations per square-kilometer than anywhere else in the world. Home in on Jordan!
Livening up the Dead Sea!
A rebirth is on its way. The best place on earth to sleep, the safest place to sunbathe, with the most therapeutic waters, is about to begin a transformation into an irresistible late-year location for European visitors. STOP PRESS 13/1/13 -- World Bank says Red-Dead Canal is realistic, any social and environmental impacts are manageable! Click here for Jordan Times report, and great photo.
Already, the Dead Sea has the kind of temperatures and sunshine that restore and rejuvenate the most acute sufferer from SAD (winter blues). But now it's one big disadvantage (rather messy, piece-meal development) is being addressed.
The plans, which are already underway, include a corniche, hiking and biking trails, a golf course and a new university.
In late 2012, I had a long conversation with the Director of Projects for the 'Jordan Development Zones' company, who confirmed that they were well beyond the planning stage. She expects serious, on-the-ground progress within five years, including the corniche , public beaches and mixed residential, commercial and retail development. Click here for more details.
The neighbouring town of Sweimeh, at the Northern end of the Dead Sea will have a busy centre and an eventual population of over 70,000 permanent residents. This is thirty or so years away but the building has begun and private money has been committed.
Most exciting of all, it seems the authorities have steered away from the earlier models where the prime beach-front locations have gone to big-name hotels which fence them and charge prohibitive prices for even an hour's access. There are very attractive, much-cheaper alternatives but they require local knowledge. Otherwise, for most short-term visitors, the only way they can float in the Dead Sea is by enriching the major hotel chains.
From a purely selfish point of view all this could not be better news. We have our apartments overlooking the Dead Sea and within an easy walk to the new Corniche area, when it is established. They are already attracting visitors. Click here for details.
It's not surprising. The Dead Sea is unique, the atmosphere is special and the whole experience is within 40 minutes drive of the capital Amman and the main airport. it is also a brilliant base for exploring Northern Jordan -- the baptism site, Mount Nebo, Makawir and Herod's Castle, Jordan's extinct volcano, Lot's Cave, the Madaba mosaic, Wadi Mujib, the Jordan Valley, Umm Qais etc.??
From the balconies you can see the night-time lights of Jerusalem, Jericho and Bethlehem. As we say in the adverts:
"The apartment is an oasis of calm and comfort from which to contemplate the near Biblical-scenes around you as you rest, relax and recuperate in temperatures often 10 degrees warmer than Amman. This is the lowest luxury apartment available for rent in the world!"
Some development's begun already. The infrastructure is being improved, the shops, though still very basic, are getting better and there are some restaurants nearby. It's certainly not the perfect holiday location for everyone, there are occasional power-cuts, the passing sheep and camels can be noticeable and public transport is essentially non-existent. The best way to judge if it would work for you is to read the reviews, near the bottom of the page.
Most recently, there are signs of real progress in our own backyard. Next door is a small resort complex, with apartments to buy and rent and a cascade of inviting swimming pools. After more than two years of hibernation the owners seem to be waking up and we've begun a tentative partnership, which could make many more apartments available at very reasonable prices; rentals that might well be covered by your savings on European winter heating bills.
It's early days but if you're interested in renting (or even buying) then
SO YOU'VE BEEN TO PETRA, AQABA AND WADI RUM AND YOU THINK YOU'VE 'DONE' JORDAN.
WE WANT TO PERSUADE YOU TO COME BACK!

BEYOND JORDAN'S GOLDEN TRIANGLE OF WORLD-CLASS DESTINATIONS (AQABA, RUM AND PETRA), IS LAYER UPON LAYER OF HISTORY, GEOGRAPHY, RELIGION AND CULTURE UNDERPINNING EVERYTHING WE KNOW AND UNDERSTAND.
JORDAN'S FERTILE TRIANGLE, the "hilly flanks", above the Dead Sea, where, for the first time ever, human beings separated themselves from other creatures!! Here they ceased hunting and gathering; 9,000 years ago these pre-pottery neolithic settlers cultivated the land and created for themselves the time and space to build up surpluses, to specialise, make art, plan, organise and think.
This happened here in Jordan, at Ain Ghazzal and Al Beidha.
JORDAN'S GREEN TRIANGLE, the network of oases criss-crossing the desert and desert-margins that supported and protected the bedouins and seasonal-herders. Azraq in the East is a true historical oasis; Ajloun is set among the scrubby Mediterranean-type forest of the North; and Dana, suspended on the edge of the escarpment that plunges down through three or four climate zones to the valley way below.
, with the DEAD SEA
at its heart, stretching from Umm Qais on the border with Syria to Aqaba on the Red Sea and inland, through Mount Nebo and Umm Ar Rassas, containing Mukawir and Bethany beyond the Jordan, where Jesus was baptised. Key sites for the Abrahamic religions and the whole region is scattered with hundreds of remains of the early Christians, the Romans, the birth of Islam and the crusader battles.
WE CAN ORGANISE seven-nights for two people, with breakfast, for around £500!
that's £70 per night, total price, for a couple.
You start off with two-nights at the Dead Sea
(less than an hour from the airport), then choose to visit any or all of:
the Azraq Oasis, the forests of Ajloun, the Dana biosphere, or Saleh's bedouin camp in Wadi Rum
Contact Issa (in the left-hand column) for good-value car-hire, with free local SIM card and 24-hour English-language support.
