Big growth in new holiday sector
The holiday rental business in Jordan is beginning to take off, according to one of the country's leading pioneers in the field, JordanHolidayHome.com
Despite the political tensions in the region, there was a 50% increase in business contacts during the past year and continued growth and development.
JordanHolidayHome, which has properties in Aqaba, the Dead Sea and Wadi Rum, has been operating a community-based style of tourism since 2009, aimed at attracting discerning, independent visitors who want to know more about Jordan and the local way of life. The business received a big boost with the arrival of easyJet's regular flights from Gatwick early last year.
The head of JordanHolidayHome, Tudor Lomas, a former BBC journalist and social development practitioner, has recently launched Jordan Holiday Blog, to help travellers know and understand the country better. He is also keen to widen the appeal of Jordan, which he regards as one of the most exciting travel destinations within easy reach of Europe.
"Where else do you have so many world-class attractions?" he asks. "The Hijaz railway, the Dead Sea, the earliest human settlement at Ain Ghazzal, the coral of Aqaba, the Baptism site, serious, impressive desert, Makawir, important eco-tourism sites, Wadi Rum, Jerash and Roman Jordan and, of course, Petra. The tourism opportunities in Jordan are massive. Not just to visit specific sites but, as we mention on the web-site, also to explore whole themes of interest from archaeology to bird-watching, from health and activity tourism to history, language and culture."
Greater understanding of what Jordan has to offer is fuelling the boom in business, according to Tudor Lomas. He also believes that their community-based approach has a growing appeal. For example, all the money that visitors spend in Wadi Rum or on local transport and services goes to the local people involved.
JordanHolidayHome makes its money from the apartment rentals, not from the locals. To that extent, Tudor Lomas views the business as a kind of micro-development project, which is bringing income and stability to dedicated, talented local people, while introducing Jordan to a much wider public. He is also aware that holiday rental has the potential to grow into a successful sustainable business; though he cautions that obsessive attention to detail is essential, as well as in-depth knowledge and undersanding of the market.
SO YOU'VE BEEN TO PETRA, AQABA AND WADI RUM AND YOU THINK YOU'VE 'DONE' JORDAN.
WE WANT TO PERSUADE YOU TO COME BACK!
EASYJET makes a second visit very affordable and now we've teamed up with Jordan's leading environmental organisation, RSCN, to offer wonderful value, luxury accommodation, off-the-beaten track in wild Jordan!
BEYOND JORDAN'S GOLDEN TRIANGLE OF WORLD-CLASS DESTINATIONS (AQABA, RUM AND PETRA), IS LAYER UPON LAYER OF HISTORY, GEOGRAPHY, RELIGION AND CULTURE UNDERPINNING EVERYTHING WE KNOW AND UNDERSTAND.
JORDAN'S FERTILE TRIANGLE, the "hilly flanks", above the Dead Sea, where, for the first time ever, human beings separated themselves from other creatures!! Here they ceased hunting and gathering; 9,000 years ago these pre-pottery neolithic settlers cultivated the land and created for themselves the time and space to build up surpluses, to specialise, make art, plan, organise and think.
This happened here in Jordan, at Ain Ghazzal and Al Beidha.
JORDAN'S GREEN TRIANGLE, the network of oases criss-crossing the desert and desert-margins that supported and protected the bedouins and seasonal-herders. Azraq in the East is a true historical oasis; Ajloun is set among the scrubby Mediterranean-type forest of the North; and Dana, suspended on the edge of the escarpment that plunges down through three or four climate zones to the valley way below.
, with the DEAD SEA
at its heart, stretching from Umm Qais on the border with Syria to Aqaba on the Red Sea and inland, through Mount Nebo and Umm Ar Rassas, containing Mukawir and Bethany beyond the Jordan, where Jesus was baptised. Key sites for the Abrahamic religions and the whole region is scattered with hundreds of remains of the early Christians, the Romans, the birth of Islam and the crusader battles.
WE CAN ORGANISE seven-nights for two people, with breakfast, for around £500!
that's £70 per night, total price, for a couple.
You start off with two-nights at the Dead Sea
(less than an hour from the airport), then choose to visit any or all of:
the Azraq Oasis, the forests of Ajloun, the Dana biosphere, or Saleh's bedouin camp in Wadi Rum
Contact Issa (in the left-hand column) for good-value car-hire, with free local SIM card and 24-hour English-language support.
EASYJET IS OPENING UP JORDAN FOR INDEPENDENT TRAVELLERS.
